Excerpt
The frogs and crickets went silent then.
A flicker of feathers in the sky, and from nowhere, a black shadow pooled around them.
There was a gust of wind, and Tavi fell partway to the side as an owl plunged toward them with outstretched talons. He began to shout a warning to Rik, but the owl screeched and it was already too late; the owl had grabbed Rik and was carrying him away.
Tavi ran after the owl, calling out, “Rik! Rik!”
Gaining altitude, the owl cast a malevolent eye over Tavi and screeched in triumph. She flew among the treetops, wings beating mightily.
The owl passed closely by a tree, and lurched as she avoided a suddenly shaking branch. A pair of paws, claws extended, stretched out from the branch and swiped at the owl. Tavi yelled, astonished, when Rik dropped from the owl’s talons. And then, Rik regained his feet and raced toward the shelter of a bush.
The owl screamed. She flew off into the darkness of the night, and in moments, there was no sign of her at all in the sky; just the flickering figure of a bat flitting across the round white moon.
Looking up at the branch, Tavi caught a glimpse of a pair of unblinking eyes, which looked back at him before they disappeared.
